News Round-Up

As per usual, there's plenty of food-related news coming out of Chinatown, but it isn't all about cupcakes and Asian BBQ. The victims of last April's Grand Street fire are still suffering, and a Chinatown murderer faces life in prison.  Here's the latest on what's up below Canal Street.

--New York Times food critic Peter Meehan lists the spots that keep him coming back to Chinatown when he craves some sweet Asian barbecue and $2 tofu 

--Do you like your martini shaken, stirred, or set aflame ? Albert Trummer, owner of Apotheke Club and self-proclaimed "cocktail artist," has been ordered to stay out of his establishment following an October 17th incident. According to a bartender, Trummer allegedly sprayed his customers with four bottles of champagne before pouring two bottles of Sambuca on the bar and trying to light it with a match.

--Chinatown resident Michael Lenahan was sentenced to 19 years to life in prison for the 2007 strangling death of 24-year-old Lorna Santiago. 

--The victims of the the worst fire to hit Chinatown in a decade are fighting their landlord for what's left of their belongings. Read about their struggle here in the New York Daily News.

--A new cupcake shop called Everything Frosted just opened on Mulberry Street. According to the New York Times, the flavors are surprisingly savory--- think red bean and green tea--and definitely worth a trip downtown.

--One of Chinatown's most popular night clubs and music venue Santos Party House was shut down by police last Thursday, only to be re-opened again four days later. Officials say that sale of controlled substances was the reason for the closure. Get the full scoop at Brooklyn Vegan.
